Bioeconomy – universal tool for coastal and rural development

Madis TilgaModern society faces fundamental intertwined challenges, which need to be dealt with swiftly and often simultaneously. Climate change, resource scarcity, regional disparities, environmental hazards, population growth are underlying aspects of any serious decision making process. For many years the concept of „green growth" or „green economy" has been adopted to address the above mentioned challenges. Now, bioeconomy - as part of green growth - takes a very pragmatic approach in an attempt to decouple economic growth from environmental pressures by focusing on the sustainable use and production of both land-based and marine biomass.

First Mosque in Estonia is in Hiiumaa!

Kärdla Mosque - Toomas Kokovkin:

Hiiumaa is full of snow! It has closed passages in forest and home yards but opened new opportunities! All islanders are waiting for ice route to be opened connecting the mainland while route to Saaremaa is already officially passable. Easier access to neighbouring coasts helps to adopt strange culture and habits.

Kärdla Cafés Days

Kärdla Cafés Days

Again on the 1st of August, traditional Cafés Day in Kärdla brought together 15 one-day cafés. The variety of cafés was wide – from home yard Italian style Bella Rosa to Blue Flash situated in Kärdla police station. There were thematic cafés such as in America style introducing old American cars and menu. Handicraft association presented a café Under the Blanket, Hiiumaa Museum did Baron’s Balcony, NGO from Kõpu village did Betlehem’s Star, and our guests from outside the island this year – Innovation Year 2009 in cooperation with Tartu Development Centre and Estonian Telework Centre opened Innovators’ Meeting Point. These are just some cafés to point out. You can find more at the home page http://www.15kohvikut.ee.
“Veteran” of the cafés project – Café Orientale, featured Little Paris this year and opened a French café, raised charity money nearly one thousand euros for Kärdla School library. As Hiiumaa is hosting B7 next year, the B7 café will hopefully be one among 15 cafés in 2010.

Nord Stream muutis Bornholmi saare juures taas marsruuti

03.09.2008 23:470809_pipiline : BNS: Kommenteeri | Prindi

Läänemerealust gaasijuhet rajav ettevõte Nord Stream AG otsustas Taanile kuuluva Bornholmi saare juures juba teist korda juhtme marsruuti muuta.
Algselt pidanuks gaasijuhe mööduma saarest lõunas. Seejärel selgus, et marsruut võib jääda Taani ja Poola vahelisele vaidlusalusele territooriumile, mistõttu see otsustati nihutada saarest põhja poole, vahendas Interfax.

Nüüd naasis Nord Stream uuesti lõunapoolse variandi juurde, mis seekord jääb väljapoole vaidlusalust ala.

Coffee and Kärdla

cafe_orientaleOn 2nd of August Kärdla celebrated its nickname Coffepots. It was given because long before other people living in Hiiumaa, the inhabitants of Kärdla got the habit of coffee drinking.

Event of 15 Cafeterias in home yards and public places was arranged for the second time by Hiiumaa Tourist Association and NGO Arhipelaag with the help of the citizens of Kärdla. This year B7 was represented by Gotland Cafeteria, run by Patric, Emma and Jessica from Gotland Youth Centre. They offered traditional saffran pancakes with jam and whipped cream, and famous Gotland whetstones.
